Ways to Prolong the Service Life of an HVAC System
HVAC systems are used during most months of the year in many climates. Often, an air conditioning unit will have an expected service life of about 12 to 15 years, with furnaces often lasting up to about 20 years with proper service and routine maintenance. If you live in a home long enough, you may have to eventually replace an air conditioner or furnace, and both of those can be quite expensive propositions. Therefore it is beneficial to know how to extend the service life of your HVAC units for as long as possible. At Comfort By Design, our HVAC technicians are able to provide HVAC maintenance and tune-up services to help prolong the service life of your HVAC equipment.
Follow these tips to help extend the operating life of your HVAC system:
- Get Routine HVAC Maintenance
Having a proper maintenance schedule is the best way to prolong the service life of your HVAC unit. In addition to regular maintenance and inspection, cleaning and regular tune-ups are just as important to ensure clean air ducts, good indoor air quality, and proper energy efficiency so you’re not wasting money on energy bills.
- Replace Air Filters Regularly
Routinely replace HVAC air filters, especially when seriously dirty. Dirty air filters are clogged up with debris and will make your HVAC system less energy efficient, causing your equipment to run harder to send air into the home. In turn, this will increase unit wear and tear and additionally increase energy usage and energy bills.
- Get A Smart Thermostat
A smart thermostat allows you to control and program your settings from a smartphone or other mobile device. Some smart thermostats can make energy-saving changes based on your HVAC habits and schedule.
- Clean Your Ducts
Dirty or clogged air ducts are going to diminish the efficiency of your HVAC system and its longevity. Having them cleaned every five years or so will preserve your indoor air quality and help extend the service life of your HVAC equipment.
- Upgrade Your Insulation
If your home insulation is inadequate, your HVAC system has to operate longer to maintain the desired indoor temperature. Drafty air coming from the outside works against the HVAC system, whether for cooling or heating the indoor air, contributing to system wear and tear. Adding insulation to your home, such as to your outer walls and basement, can prevent letting the outdoor temperatures in.
- Rest Your HVAC System
On mild nights, perhaps late Summer, Fall, and Spring, keep your HVAC system turned off when possible. Instead, run fans, open the windows, cover up with some blankets (particularly at night while sleeping) or wear some heavier clothing. This can lessen wear and tear on your HVAC system.
