When Should You Use a Humidifier?
Humidifiers add humidity (moisture) to the air through the release of steam or water vapor. For many people, the benefits of added moisture into the air can include relief from dry skin, sore throat, dry cough, runny nose or sinus congestion, dry sinuses, bloody noses, allergies, and can especially provoke heightened symptoms for people with asthma. At Comfort By Design, we are your source for HVAC products and services designed to optimize your comfort all year long.
So when is the best time to use a whole house humidifier?
During Winter
The most advantageous time to use a humidifier is usually in the dry winter months when the temperature and humidity are low, often under 30 percent. We often use the furnace or other heating devices during the cold months of the year to maintain warmth indoors. However, with the windows closed, the warm to hot air circulating tends to diminish the moisture content in the home, leaving living spaces dry and the air somewhat stale and less comfortable to breathe. Running a humidifier during the winter can enhance a room’s air quality and reduce allergy symptoms and other respiratory issues.
During Other Times of the Year
Even though winter is the most popular time of the year to run a humidifier, it can also be used with benefits during other times of the year when the humidity level drops below 30 percent. In the summer, the humidity levels are usually high enough to preclude the need for a humidifier, unless the climate is exceptionally dry.
Utilizing a humidifier on a regular basis during beneficial times of the year can help create an optimal environment for health benefits, such as for your skin and respiratory health.
However, never use a humidifier when the humidity level exceeds 50 percent. Too much humidity can become a breeding ground for bacterial growth. If your humidifier is evidencing signs of microbe infestation or mold growth, clean it thoroughly first before operating it. You should preferably use demineralized or distilled water with your humidifier to prevent the spread of contaminants.
